Curriculum

We provide a rich, stimulating and balanced curriculum which captures children’s interests and inspires a love of learning.

Our inclusive teaching strategies enable all pupils to realise their full potential. Learners develop their independence, resilience, empathy and confidence to embrace challenge. Children acquire a deeper awareness of their rights and responsibilities as global citizens now and in the future.

We are proud of our village location in Cornwall and are developing our outdoor spaces to enhance our curriculum. We visit farms, local wild areas and beaches to enhance our pupils’ understanding of the rich heritage that we live within. We view ourselves as a ‘growing school’, developing practical skills alongside curriculum areas.

Whilst maintaining a creative approach, our key curriculum areas are based on the following tried and tested teaching models:

Reading – we teach the explicit skills of reading through a rigorous phonics program – Read Write Inc. We continue to foster a love and understanding in reading through various strategies including whole class shared reading and the use of ‘Accelerated Reader’ and ‘Fiction Express’.

Writing – we teach writing using Pie Corbett’s ‘Talk for Writing’. This is a collaborative and rigorous tool for teaching writing with proven results and the children love it!

Maths – We primarily use ‘White Rose Hub’ to help us to teach the new and challenging mastery maths curriculum. We teach this using a clear sequence of lessons.

Science – We link this to our topic whenever we can but work hard to ensure that the children have a vast coverage of a range of topics as per the national curriculum. We make links with topical international, national and local science events where possible.

RE – we have a rolling curriculum that incorporates ‘Understanding Christianity’ as well as world religions and spiritual Cornwall.

Our wider curriculum is planned with the children’s interests in mind on a rolling program of broad topic themes which allows parents and pupils to engage with the learning and to derive key questions that can then be answered. Within each topic, we plan for real life outcomes alongside exciting trips and visits, bring learning to life and making it meaningful. We collaborate with our partner schools within St Barnabas MAT to provide further opportunities for our children. There are regular trips or visits from special visitors to enhance our pupils’ experience of learning and life.
